CRM
Under the Contingent Reimbursement Model (CRM) Code, you may be eligible for protection if you become a victim of a scam. Introduced in 2018, this code was designed to reduce the frequency and impact of Authorised Push Payment (APP) scams. Its goal is to reimburse individuals who have fallen victim to scams and have acted responsibly. A significant number of UK banks have agreed to comply with the CRM Code.
Once you notify your bank about the fraudulent payment, you should submit a formal claim to them.
This letter should include:
- The purpose and amount of the payment.
- The method used to make the payment (e.g., electronic transfer, cash, cheque, etc.).
- How the fraudsters initially contacted you.
- The steps you took to act on any warnings issued by your bank (if any) before sending the payment.
As per regulatory requirements, banks must acknowledge your claim within 15 business days. If they cannot respond within this period, they are required to explain the delay. They are then permitted an additional 20 business days to provide a final decision.
